Term
Approach
The travel phase that sets up a feature or trick.
GLOSSARY · Freestyle & trick grammar
The approach is the ride-in to a jump, rail or pipe wall: line, speed, stance and edge are set here. Most problems on a feature start with an approach that is too fast, too slow or off line.
Context and distinction
Approach is the travel before the feature; takeoff is the moment of leaving it. On rails, the approach side (frontside or backside) is part of the trick name.
