Term
Backcountry
Mountain terrain outside the relevant managed resort setting; boundaries must be made explicit.
GLOSSARY · Terrain, snow & environment
Backcountry is terrain beyond the area a resort controls and patrols, usually reached by hiking, touring or leaving through a gate. There is no avalanche control, marking or rescue on standby, so riders need avalanche training, rescue equipment and partners.
Context and distinction
Off-piste can still be inside a resort boundary; backcountry is outside managed terrain. The exact meaning depends on local rules, so the boundary should always be stated.
