Backside Shifty
HOW TO DO IT
Backside Shifty
A backside board twist in the air, returned to the initial heading before landing. The board and torso twist against one another; the landing stance does not change.
Preparation and setting
Reliable straight airs and a familiar jump with clear runout. Rehearse the movement before increasing its size.
How to do it
- Approach on a flat base and depart with board and body aligned.
- Produce the straight-air takeoff first.
- After becoming airborne, counterrotate the board backside.
- Reverse the twist so the board returns underneath the riding position.
- Land on the intended heading, absorb and ride away.
How to learn it
Separate the backside turn and return across two training bounces before doing both in one. On gentle snow, rehearse a small sliding backside redirection with the heel edge clear, then return to straight travel. Transfer the timing to a modest air. The source's later shoulder pre-position is an optional styling variation, not the starting task.
Errors and corrections
Twist begins at the lip: reset with straight airs and delay the twist. Entire body rotates together: rehearse upper/lower opposition. Board remains across the landing: reduce the displacement and prioritise unwinding.
Checks and cues
Board changes heading in the air and returns before contact. Cue: depart straight; twist afterwards. Add a Method or other grab only after return timing is controlled.

01
teaching summary — coaching review required
The source separates the twist and return before combining them, using a sliding rehearsal before an airborne attempt with controlled departure.

editorial review notes
Documented error: initiating before leaving the lip can compromise take-off.
