Method
Board and setup: sidecut; waist; taper; setback; camber; flex; torsion
GLOSSARY
These terms describe the board's shape, profile and flex and where the rider stands on it. Together they decide how the board turns, floats, holds an edge and pops.
Context and distinction
Each term has its own glossary entry; this page connects them. A setup choice is not the same as a riding technique.

Board and setup: sidecut; waist; taper; setback; camber; flex; torsion
Sidecut. The plan-view shape of a board's side edge. A published sidecut radius describes design geometry; it does not guarantee the radius of every ridden turn.
Preparation and setting
A terminology reference: use an existing matching technique for a reproduction lesson.
Execution / application
- Identify the term in one existing movement.
- State its feature and travel context.
- Compare the observable property with its nearest confusion pair.
- Link the exact established lesson.
- Keep disputed source conventions alongside the definition.
Learning and practice
Explain the term in plain English using a source-matched example. This is terminology application, not a new drill for every word.
Errors, limits and corrections
Do not substitute a body pose for a board-mechanics definition or derive movement from a name alone.
Observable checks
The reader can define each listed term and identify what it does not establish.
Waist
The narrow central region of the board in plan view. Waist width is distinct from width under the rider's actual binding positions.
Taper
A difference between nose-region and tail-region widths in the manufacturer's stated measurement convention. Check the actual dimensions rather than treating the label as a complete performance prediction.
Setback
Rearward displacement of a stated reference, commonly the recommended stance. Identify what reference is being displaced and relative to which board reference.
Camber
A longitudinal profile with an upward arch between contact regions when described in its unloaded reference state. Hybrid profiles require their actual zones to be specified.
Rocker
A longitudinal profile with a reverse arch/upward end rise in specified regions. The location of those regions matters; not every rocker-labelled board has the same profile.
Flex
Resistance and response to bending under stated loading. Longitudinal and torsional response differ; brand numbers are not a universal cross-brand scale.
Torsion
Twisting deformation about the board's longitudinal axis. It differs from whole-board pivot and from bending the board lengthwise.
