Term
Crevasse
A crack in glacial ice, potentially concealed by snow.
GLOSSARY · Mountain literacy & safety vocabulary
Crevasses form where glacier ice bends and cracks. Snow can bridge them so they are invisible from the surface. Glacier riding requires local knowledge, a guide or rope and crevasse-rescue skills.
Context and distinction
Crevasses are features of glaciers, not of ordinary snowpacks. A snow bridge that holds one person may not hold another.
