Term
Crust
A firmer surface layer over softer snow; it may support or break under a rider.
GLOSSARY · Terrain, snow & environment
Crust forms when the snow surface hardens through sun and refreeze, rain or wind, while the snow underneath stays softer. A thick crust can be ridden like firm snow; a thin breakable crust collapses unpredictably and makes turning difficult.
Context and distinction
Crust is a surface layer over softer snow; ice is hard all the way down. Breakable crust is one of the most demanding conditions for any rider.
