Term
Edge catch
An unexpected bite of the downhill edge into the snow that abruptly stops the board and usually throws the rider down.
GLOSSARY · Turns & riding control
An edge catch happens when the edge that should be off the snow digs in — typically the downhill edge while riding a flat board or sliding sideways. It is one of the most common causes of hard falls for beginners.
Context and distinction
An edge catch is unintended engagement; edge engagement is the deliberate version. A washout is the opposite problem: the edge loses grip and slides away.
