External cue

An attentional prompt directed toward an intended effect or the environment.

GLOSSARY · Learning, analysis & assessment

An external cue points the rider's attention to an outcome or something outside the body, such as "draw a round track in the snow" or "aim for the tree on the left". Research on motor learning often finds external focus helps performance.

Context and distinction

External cues focus on effects; internal cues focus on body parts. Coaches use both depending on the rider and task.
