Term
Flat light
Lighting with weak surface contrast that makes terrain shape difficult to judge.
GLOSSARY · Terrain, snow & environment
In flat light — cloud, fog or snowfall — shadows disappear and bumps, dips and drops become hard to see. Riders slow down, stay near trees or markers for contrast and use goggles with a low-light lens.
Context and distinction
Flat light is a visibility condition, not a snow type. It changes how terrain looks, not the terrain itself.
