Term
Gradient
The steepness of a slope.
GLOSSARY · Terrain, snow & environment
Gradient is how steep a slope is, usually given in degrees or percent. It affects speed, how hard the edges must work, and — above roughly 30 degrees — avalanche potential.
Context and distinction
Gradient is steepness; aspect is direction. Resort colour ratings combine gradient with other factors and differ between countries.
