The heel edge runs along the side of the board under the rider's heels. Riders engage it by sinking back against the highbacks; it carries heel-side turns, heel-side traverses and the falling-leaf and sideslip exercises beginners learn first.
Context and distinction
The heel edge stays the heel edge in switch. A heel-side turn is not automatically a backside turn in every naming system.
