Lateral Pressure Control
GLOSSARY · Movement & mechanics
The rider’s relationship to the supporting board influences this distribution. AASI includes this as a distinct fundamental.
Context and distinction
Pressure distribution across the width is different from whole-board loading magnitude and from the geometric edge angle.

Lateral Pressure Control
Lateral pressure control concerns support toward the toe or heel side of the board. It interacts with edge angle but is not identical to a measurement of tilt.
Preparation and setting
Stationary edge control; shallow travel on a gentle slope.
Execution / practice sequence
- Start in a supported stance.
- Move pressure toward the toe side through coordinated ankle, knee and hip action.
- Return toward neutral, then explore heel-side support.
- During a traverse, make small adjustments while retaining the line.
- Release deliberately before changing edges.
How to learn / practise
Explore both sides statically, then in separate traverses. Compare where pressure is felt with what the board actually does.
Errors and corrections
Leaning beyond recoverable support causes a fall: reduce the range. Toe-side waist folding: restore whole-body balance. Heel-side sitting too far away: bring the board back beneath support.
Observable checks
Pressure adjustments are deliberate, with grip and release still available on both edges.
