Layback — Snow / Bank
A low movement with rear-hand support while the board redirects across snow or a bank. It is distinct from an inverted Layback handplant.
Preparation and setting
Low-position balance, controlled bank turns and deliberate hand-supported recovery. Establish a suitable easy application before increasing speed or depth.
How to do it
- In the bank example, begin the ascent using toe-side control.
- Progress through flatter board contact toward heel-side support as the board slides across the bank.
- Lower the body before leaning back and placing the rear hand as support.
- Extend the rear leg for the source's styled position, retaining recoverable body support.
- Draw that leg back and use the coordinated movement to raise the torso.
- Return to balanced riding and complete the terrain line.
How to learn it
Work through edging, low support and recovery separately before joining them. The rear leg styling is not a substitute for learning to get upright.
Errors and corrections
Dropping from a tall stance: begin lower. Hand lands as an uncontrolled brace: reduce speed and range. Remaining seated: practise the retract-and-recover phase without exaggerating the extension.
Checks and cues
Hand support, board redirection and deliberate recovery are all present. Cue: low first, extend only as far as you can recover. Do not teach the snow version as a fully inverted handplant.
