Term

Powder

Relatively loose, unconsolidated snow; its depth and density still need description.

GLOSSARY · Terrain, snow & environment

Powder is fresh, soft snow that has not been packed. Riders float on it by keeping speed, shifting weight slightly back and making longer, rounder turns. Depth and density vary a lot from light dry powder to heavy wet snow.

Context and distinction

Powder describes snow quality; off-piste describes location. Powder can be found on groomed runs early in the morning and is not always deep.
