Term

Runout

The area available for continuation and slowing after a slope or feature.

GLOSSARY · Terrain, snow & environment

The runout is the flatter area after a slope, jump landing or feature where riders slow down and stop. A safe runout is long and clear enough for the speed being carried.

Context and distinction

Runout is where you continue after the action; the landing is where you touch down. In avalanche terrain, the runout zone is where moving snow can stop.
