A splitboard splits lengthwise into two ski-like halves for climbing uphill with skins, then locks back together into a snowboard for the descent. It is the main tool for snowboard ski touring.
Context and distinction
A splitboard is equipment for touring; backcountry is where it is used. It still requires avalanche knowledge and rescue gear.
