Term
Terrain trap
Terrain that can increase the consequences of being carried or buried by moving snow.
GLOSSARY · Mountain literacy & safety vocabulary
Terrain traps are places where an avalanche's consequences are worse: gullies and creek beds where snow piles up deeply, cliffs below a slope, or trees that a slide can push a rider into. Even a small slide can be serious in a terrain trap.
Context and distinction
A terrain trap describes consequences, not the likelihood of an avalanche. A gentle-looking slope above a gully can still be dangerous.
