Term
Tree well
A depression or loose-snow space around a tree.
GLOSSARY · Mountain literacy & safety vocabulary
Around the trunks of trees, especially conifers, branches stop snow from packing, leaving a deep, loose hole. Riders who fall head-first into one can become trapped. Riding with a partner in sight is the main safeguard.
Context and distinction
A tree well is a hazard of deep snow in trees, not an avalanche. The danger is known as snow immersion suffocation (SIS).
