Skill

Turn-Shape and Line Adaptation

Varying turn shape, size and line through the timing, intensity and duration of movements.

GLOSSARY

Riders adapt turn shape, size and line to terrain, snow and speed by changing the timing, intensity and duration of their movements.

Context and distinction

This is the skill; turn shape and turn radius describe the result.

HOW TO DO IT

Turn-Shape and Line Adaptation

Line adaptation changes turn shape, size and placement to meet the actual terrain. A correct movement pattern still fails tactically if its arc does not fit the space.

Preparation and setting

Basic turn versatility and clear route visibility.

Execution / practice sequence

  1. Identify turning space and exit.
  2. Choose a turn outcome and size.
  3. Place the first arc to prepare the next.
  4. Adjust timing, intensity or duration one at a time.
  5. Compare the planned and actual path.
  6. Stop and replan if space or control is lost.

How to learn / practise

Ride a short known section with two deliberately different line plans. Keep the chosen surface comparable.

Errors and corrections

Focusing only on posture: inspect route outcome. Tightening the final turn to fix an earlier placement error: redesign the opening arc.

Observable checks

The line fits the chosen section and leaves usable space for subsequent turns.
