An overview of turn vocabulary: edge, fall line, apex, initiation, transition, skid and carve.

GLOSSARY

These words describe where a turn happens on the slope and how the board behaves through it. Each has its own glossary entry.

Context and distinction

Edge angle, board heading and skid angle are different measurements.

HOW TO DO IT

Turns: edge; fall line; apex; initiation; transition; skid; carve

Edge. The board boundary/contact used to organize support and direction. Toe and heel identify rider-relative sides; edge angle is measured against the local snow surface.

Preparation and setting

A terminology reference: use an existing matching technique for a reproduction lesson.

Execution / application

  1. Identify the term in one existing movement.
  2. State its feature and travel context.
  3. Compare the observable property with its nearest confusion pair.
  4. Link the exact established lesson.
  5. Keep disputed source conventions alongside the definition.

Learning and practice

Explain the term in plain English using a source-matched example. This is terminology application, not a new drill for every word.

Errors, limits and corrections

Do not substitute a body pose for a board-mechanics definition or derive movement from a name alone.

Observable checks

The reader can define each listed term and identify what it does not establish.

Fall line

The locally steepest downhill direction. It can change across a slope and is not necessarily the centreline of the marked piste.

Apex

A selected reference point within a turn, often its central or most developed phase. State the convention; different analyses do not always assign it to an identical instant.

Initiation

The start of organizing a new turn. Edge release, steering and loading may overlap rather than form one fixed universal sequence.

Transition

The connection between turns. In pipe terminology, the same word also names curved terrain connecting flatbottom and wall; preserve context.

Skid

Lateral board displacement relative to its heading. A controlled skid can manage direction and speed; it is not always an error.

Carve

An edge-supported turn with little lateral skid. Read the actual path and track rather than defining it from body lean alone.
