Base of support

The area under the rider through which they are supported — on a snowboard, the part of the board and edge in useful contact with the snow.

GLOSSARY · Movement & mechanics

Balance depends on keeping the centre of mass over the base of support. On a snowboard that support changes constantly: it narrows to one edge when the board is tilted, shifts toward an end in a press, and shrinks to a small contact patch on a rail.

Context and distinction

Base of support is a balance concept. It is unrelated to the base, which is the board's sliding underside.
