Term

Edge engagement

Establishing an edge-snow interaction that provides the intended support or direction control.

GLOSSARY · Movement & mechanics

Edge engagement is the moment and degree to which the edge bites into the snow. Early, progressive engagement gives a clean, controlled turn; late or abrupt engagement can cause skidding or catching.

Context and distinction

Engagement and edge release are two sides of a turn: one starts the edge's grip, the other ends it. Neither requires a particular edge angle.
