Term

Edge release

Reducing edge engagement sufficiently for the intended task; not necessarily a prolonged flat-base position.

GLOSSARY · Movement & mechanics

To finish a turn or start the next one, the rider reduces how much the current edge is gripping, letting the board flatten or slip so it can be redirected. A release can be quick or gradual depending on the turn.

Context and distinction

Edge release does not mean riding flat for a long time. It is the controlled letting-go of one edge, usually followed straight away by engagement of the other.
