Term

Grip

The supporting or resisting effect of the board-snow contact that limits unwanted slip.

GLOSSARY · Movement & mechanics

Grip is what keeps the board from sliding sideways when it is on edge. It depends on edge angle, pressure, snow conditions and edge sharpness. Good grip lets the board follow its sidecut in a carve.

Context and distinction

Grip and skid are opposites on a spectrum. Most turns mix the two; a pure carve maximises grip and a pivot slide deliberately reduces it.
