Term

Skid

A sideways component of board movement relative to its orientation; it can be intentional.

GLOSSARY · Movement & mechanics

A board skids when it slides partly sideways instead of tracking cleanly along its edge. Skidding is used deliberately to control speed, tighten a turn or stop, and appears unintentionally when grip is lost.

Context and distinction

Skid is the opposite of grip. A skidded turn is not a failed carve; it is a valid way to turn with more speed control.
