Drill
Lower-Body Garland
HOW TO DO IT
Lower-Body Garland
A lower-body garland is a partial-turn drill for steering and pivot development. Returning toward a traverse is part of the task; it need not be carved.
Preparation and setting
Controlled traverse and sideslip on a gentle slope.
Execution / practice sequence
- Begin on a stable traverse.
- Release enough resistance to guide the board partly toward the fall line.
- Use coordinated lower-body steering.
- Re-engage and guide back toward the traverse without completing a full edge change.
- Repeat or stop.
- Practise the other edge separately.
How to learn / practise
Start with small redirections. Progress toward full turns only after both the descent and return are controlled.
Errors and corrections
The board points downhill and cannot return: reduce the redirection and use easier terrain. Upper-body throwing: isolate the leg contribution with the coach.
Observable checks
Partial arcs repeat with intentional speed control and a deliberate return.
HOW TO DO IT
Shallow Garland Scallops
Learn a controlled entry and return while retaining the same edge.
Preparation and setting
Traverse and stop established; gentle quiet lane, selected finish visible.
Exercise sequence
- Begin slow traverse.
- Modestly reduce leading-end engagement and let board point slightly more downhill.
- Restore engagement early enough to shape back across slope.
- Continue a brief traverse or stop.
- Compare entry, return and finish.
- Repeat at same depth; deepen only when recovery remains reliable.
Transfer
Prepare the old-edge release of D20/D21, then complete individual turns.
Errors addressed
No turn entry; Runaway deep garland; Tail kick on return; Accidental edge change.
Success check
Rounded shallow scallops return across slope with sufficient stopping margin.
Simplify when needed
Make shallower entry, stop between scallops or return to D15.
Editorial origin
SBSweet editorial exercise; not claimed as an official association drill.

01
teaching summary — coaching review required
CASI (S3) uses partial turns to develop lower-body rotation. Editorial variants: compare toe-side and heel-side tasks; ask the rider to describe board direction before complete linked turns.
02
editorial review notes
A garland is not automatically carved.
