Drill

Measured redirection

distinguish a useful pivot from an uncontrolled kick.

HOW TO DO IT

Measured redirection

distinguish a useful pivot from an uncontrolled kick.

Preparation and setting

Demonstrate controlled pivoting and stopping on moderate terrain first, plus AMTA-11. Use a short, visible steep application with a generous finish. This is a grounded teaching pathway, not a jump-turn lesson for a narrow exposed couloir. Hop turns and no-fall terrain require separate instruction and are outside this article.

Exercise task

  1. on familiar snow, make a single modest redirect and settle into a controlled new-edge slide. Repeat with the opposite edge. The observer records how much heading changed, whether the path stayed inside the lane and whether speed was regulated.

Transfer and success check

use only the amount needed in a bump or steep corridor. Success includes repeatable completion and a stop; a fast tail movement by itself earns no credit.

Regression

smaller redirect or garland.

Progression

a pair, then a modest pitch increase.
