Drill
Minimum-effective adjustment
HOW TO DO IT
Minimum-effective adjustment
find whether excessive aft posture is masking the actual problem.
Preparation and setting
Required: linked turns, controlled stopping and a known open route. Start with shallow, consistent soft snow in an assessed managed area, with an easy exit. Deep snow requires a companion plan; do not learn close to trees, wells or hidden terrain traps. AMTA-21 describes the boundary between riding technique and mountain-risk decisions.
Exercise task
- in a short shallow-soft section, compare the rider's normal stance with a slightly smaller aft adjustment while keeping the route conservative. Observe nose behaviour, leading-foot steering and trailing-leg effort. Do not deliberately force a nose dive to find a limit.
Transfer and success check
maintain adaptable balance in AMTA-14–16. Success is flotation plus steering and recoverable range, not merely keeping the nose high.
Regression
thinner soft layer or smoother snow.
Progression
a pair of shallow turns.
