Torsional Twist

A difference in the board’s tilt along its length, produced by twisting rather than rolling the entire board as one rigid shape.

GLOSSARY · Movement & mechanics

It can change the edge relationship near one foot relative to the other. The board’s torsional flexibility influences how it responds.

Context and distinction

Torsional flex is a property or capacity; torsional twist is the deformation or board-performance state.

HOW TO DO IT

Torsional Twist

Torsional twist is a difference in orientation along the board, rather than tipping the entire board as one rigid piece. Independent leg action helps develop it.

Preparation and setting

Stationary balance in boots and controlled sideslipping.

Execution / practice sequence

  1. Keep the pelvis supported between the feet.
  2. Explore a small difference in front and rear ankle/knee action.
  3. Feel how the ends respond without forcing the joints.
  4. Return to a symmetrical stance.
  5. Add a small leading-end guidance task during a controlled sideslip.

How to learn / practise

Compare matched and slightly different foot actions. Use only a comfortable range; observe board response rather than assuming all boards twist equally.

Errors and corrections

Twisting the shoulders dramatically may hide the intended leg task. Forcing a stiff board is not the aim. Reduce range and restore balance before continuing.

Observable checks

The rider can distinguish whole-board tilt from different front/rear actions and return to neutral.
