Project Carving 180 chapter 01 — Strong legs are not enough

As a snowboard instructor, bodybuilding coach, and someone who has spent years studying movement, strength training, and human performance, I thought I understood how to prepare the body for snowboarding.
And in many ways, I did.
Strength matters.
Mobility matters.
Balance matters.
They all make you a better athlete.
But over the past seasons, one question kept coming back.
Why doesn't getting stronger automatically make me a better carving rider?
The answer wasn't in the gym.
It was on the snow.
Watching high-level carving riders—and feeling it in my own body—I realized something.
The goal isn't simply to build stronger muscles.
The goal is to teach those muscles to work the right way, at the right time, and together.
A carving rider doesn't just need strength.
We need to create force, absorb it, hold it, redirect it, react instantly, stay stable under extreme edge angles, and maintain precise pressure through the entire chain:
HIP → KNEE → ANKLE.
That was the moment I stopped asking,
“What exercises should I do?”
…and started asking a different question.
What does a carving rider's body actually need to be able to do?
That single question changed everything.
I believe that the better we teach our body to move off the snow, the faster and more efficiently we can progress on the snow.
That's why, over the past weeks, I've been building, testing, and refining an off-snow performance system based on that idea.
Every session.
Every exercise.
Every adjustment.
Before I ever ask another rider to trust it.
It's still evolving, and I'm still testing it on myself.
Over the next few weeks, I'd like to take you behind the scenes and share how this system is being built—and why.
This isn't another snowboard workout.
It's a movement system designed to help riders move better, learn faster, and progress more efficiently on snow.
Build the athlete.
Build the rider.
