Term
Down-unweighting
Reducing the load on the board by flexing quickly, so pressure drops for a moment and the edge change becomes easier.
GLOSSARY · Movement & mechanics
The rider sinks or pulls the legs up at the end of a turn; for a brief moment the board is lightly loaded and can be tipped onto the new edge. It is common in bumps, steeper terrain and dynamic carving, where staying low keeps the rider stable.
Context and distinction
Down-unweighting is the opposite timing to up-unweighting, which extends to lighten the board. Retraction is a closely related movement and some teaching systems use the terms differently, so the method's own description matters.
